ABOUT US
As the mother of a young teenage son with autism I can relate to the grief and despair upon learning that your apparently normal child is diagnosed with a neurological disorder without a known cause or cure. I understand the agonizing rollercoaster ride and the toll it takes on your family emotionally and financially. I know the guilt associated with not trying out the numerous therapies, diets and supplements touted as cure because you wouldn’t want to deprive your child of anything that might make him/her better. To be sure, there are abundant of anecdotal stories of children with autism that have “recovered “with alternative therapies, however, no scientific studies can verify these claims. My experience has taught me that teaching and raising a child with autism is hard work and that there are no miracle “pills” out there to ease the labor.
I graduated from the University of Michigan, Dearborn with a Master’s degree in Special Education in 2005 and was nominated as the Honor Scholar in the graduate program that year. I received my training for the BCBA certification at NOVA Southeastern University in Florida 2010 at the Baudhuin preschool for children with autism and at a private clinic in Ft. Lauderdale providing VB-therapy. Prior to becoming a mother to a child with autism I worked as a lawyer and a diplomat in the Icelandic Foreign Service. Throughout the years I have participated in numerous workshops and conferences, such as the DIR floor time, the PLAY project, Dr. Vincent Carbone’s VB-workshops, the Association Method, University of Mississippi; I am familiar with the Montessori curriculum and materials, Touch Math, Reading Mastery (DISTAR) and more.
